I soldered all the pins on the motor shield and just tried hooking up a servo and I'm not getting anything.
I'm able to run the servo off the arduino itself.
The power led is not lit.
I'm using power via usb. Is this cause for concern?
How do I get the motor shield working? I'd really like to use it for the servo as well as other applications..

Please post photos showing your soldering on the shield. The power led does not affect servo operation. Servo power comes from the Arudino.

Your servo cables are plugged in backwards. The yellow wire should be closest to the main Arduino headers.

I"ve tried them both ways.
When I plug the shield in should I be getting the power led to turn on?

The power led is not coming on because you have not installed the VIN jumper. But the power led has nothing to do with servos. Servos get their power from the Arduino 5v pin.
Please post the code you are using to test the servos.
