Problem with Wave Shield

Post by Nzarra »

I am a complete novice at this. Yesterday I assembled my Wave Shield and thought everything was ok but when I set up Arduino this morning as soon as I connected the wave shield to Arduino Uno would loose power and power light would fade. Works fine without shield installed.

Now from what I can find that suggests a short ?

I will check all my solder connections but after seeing another post about a chip upside down I realised that one of the chips I have does not have the little semi circular cut out to match to silk screen so am wondering if I have put it on the wrong way around. It is the TLV2462 chip.

Any help appreciated

It does look like the chip is upside down The spots I marked should be pin 1 and the chip in the lower left isn't correct. Most of your soldering looks OK but there are a few that could use a bit more sloder and some that didn't flow out well.

Many Thanks - I will have a go at removing it and flipping chip and then re check all solder and be a little more generous (did not want to overdo and think went to other extreme, especially on the header pins.

Any tips for removing a component - assume I melt solder again and remove but with six pins could be tricky

ChipQuik solder is what they use for multi pin devices or a hot air gun. The other way is to run your iron along one side until it melts and pry (gently) a small amount then go to the other side. Walk back and forth until the pins come out. Use solder braid to get as much solder off as possible before starting.

Removing and turning chip around worked well and got power to the Arduino with Wave whiled plugged in. Formatted SD card and put some WAV files together - based on the serial output appears to be reading and playing files but I am only getting a little buzzing from the headphones or speaker (connected through headphone jack)

Could I have damaged the chip putting in wrong to start ?

Did some testing using cheap headset test from other threads - nothing on R7 capacitor lead

On Arduino
3 - light static
4 - loud static
5 - nothing

DAC Pins
3 - light static
4 - loud static
5 - nothing
8 - nothing

It's possible that the heat and stress of removing/resoldering the TLV2462 did damage it. That's always a risk in rework.

Post another photo of the underside of the shield to confirm the soldering, then we'll look for other sources of trouble.

Any suggestions on where to go with this - or do I just bite the bullet and order another one ?

You probably don't need a whole new Wave Shield, just another op amp for output.

Go ahead and remove the one that's there (the same way you did before, or just clip it out with a wire cutter and remove the pins from the holes one at a time), and get one of these:

https://www.adafruit.com/products/808

That will work as a replacement for the one that's there.

Once you've removed the op amp, try testing the DAC's output with a high-impedance speaker again.
