2.8" TFT Resistive TouchScreen intermittent on Mega 2560

I have a 2.8" TFT Resistive Touch Screen Shield on a Mega 2560. I have switched the jumpers and verified their continuity. I see some activity in the serial monitor and a couple of times was able to toggle the ON/OFF switch on the screen using the onoffbutton sketch.
However, the touch screen seems to be unpredictable.
Is there anything I may have done wrong or any other steps I can do to determine if there is a problem with the unit
