Senior Design Help (oscilloscope and function generator)

Post by bradleyjn »

Hi, our names are Bradley and David and we are working on our senior design project for electrical engineering at Lehigh University. We believe our proposed product may be of interest to you and we would like some preliminary feedback from potential users.

Our proposed product is called Lab-in-a-Box. This product consists of an oscilloscope and function generator in one package. This product is designed to be low cost and easy to use. We think this product might be very useful to people who don’t have access to professional electronic lab equipment.

We would really appreciate it if you could take a minute to complete our quick user survey.

I've removed the link to your survey temporarily, and need to explain some principles and ask some questions of our own before putting it back.

First, the main purpose of these forums is to provide technical support for Adafruit products. We explicitly fight attempts to turn it into a promotional/advertising medium for people who think, "hey, there's a large group of people with common interests.. let's 'message' at them!" There's always a grey zone though, because people want to share information about their projects, and sometimes we hear about Open Source/Hardware projects whose philosophy lines up with our own.

When we find posts in the grey zone, we evaluate them on the following criteria:

- Was the post made by a participating member of the Adafruit community? People with a history of contributing value to the community get more slack because they tend to know what will fly and what won't. This is your first post in the forum, and while that doesn't count against you, you don't have the bonus points that come from being familiar.

- Is the project Open Source or Open Hardware? That's a big one because we're an Open company. We publish our hardware design files and software libraries so people can use them, modify them, or even clone them without any restrictions beyond the ones inherent in the Open licenses. Your post doesn't say anything about that either way, so I'll ask directly:

Is your project Open Source or Open Hardware?

- Is the project free-as-in-beer? We're more tolerant of people who want to give something away. Messages about things that cost money are called "advertising" and we don't do that here. Your post mentions a "low cost" product, so that's one mark against it.

- Is the project of interest or benefit to our community? This one has less weight than you might think because it's easy to argue that putting ads for the Tek MDO3000 on the pages would be "of interest or benefit". We don't do that because that's not what we want these forums to be.
