I just went through the reset process using CXTU 6.3.0.
Because of the auto-discover radio process, you should insert a XBee with no sleep timer first, detect the radio, and then swap to the problematic XBee.
Once you've swapped, start the firmware replacement process by clicking on the update button (not write), wait for the error asking you to press the reset button, short/hold the reset for several seconds, and then release. It may take a few tries, but it works.
