Updating XBees on OSX with VMWare Fusion

Post by jamesm »

I mentioned in a previous post that I had successfully updated XBees on a Mac using VMWare Fusion. I use VMWare with XP, but X-CTU installs and runs on Windows Server 2003 which has a free trial version.

If you have a Mac and want to update XBees, you can install a 30 day demo of VMWare Fusion from here: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/

There's a free trial version of Windows Server 2003 here: http://www.vmware.com/landing_pages/fus ... l-vms.html

The only hitch I had was that the virtual machine needs a password which is hard to find. There's a readme in the first rar file which says:

Use the following information to log on to Microsoft Windows contained within the virtual machine
· Username: Administrator
· Password: Evaluation1

To be clear, I've updated XBees with an XP virtual machine and have only tested that X-CTU starts on the Server 2003 virtual machine. I have some XBees on order which I will try updating when they arrive.

I got my Tweet-A-Watt kit yesterday and tested updating the XBees under Windows Server 2003. It works fine. Windows even installed the drivers for the FTDI cable automatically.

Since both VMWare and Windows Server 2003 are both available as free 30 day trials, it seems like this is a good solution for Mac owners who just need to update the firmware on their XBees.
