Trouble updating Xbee firmware

Post by jts3k »

Greetings! I am having difficulty updating the firmware on my Xbee Pro S1 module (https://www.adafruit.com/product/964).

I am interfacing with the modules via an Adafruit XBee Adapter kit - v1.1 (https://www.adafruit.com/products/126), which are connected to my computer via a SparkFun FTDI Basic Breakout - 3.3V (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9873).

I followed the steps on the Adafruit Xbee tutorial and got as far as updating the firmware via XCTU. I'm using the latest version of XCTU, which looks pretty different from the version in the tutorial but seems to offer all the same functionality. After connecting to the Xbee module and going through the update firmware sequence I'm asked to "Reset" the radio module (see screenshot at link below). This is where I'm stuck.

There is no "reset" button on the Adafruit XBee Adapter kit. I tried power-cycling the module a number of ways - disconnecting the adpater from the FTDI board, disconnecting the Xbee module from the adapter, disconnecting the USB cable from the FTDI board, disconnecting the USB cable from the computer... all no good. I also tried "pulling the reset pin low" as the Adafruit tutorial suggests - by temporarily connecting the reset pin to the ground pin. Also no good. After trying any of these methods to reset the module and then pressing OK in XCTU I end up with the same error - "Could not enter programming mode - could not reset the module." See error message at link below.

I've tried using XCTU on a Mac and on a Windows machine and both produced the same error.

Curiously I'm able to otherwise configure the Xbee module via XCTU. I can change the baud rate, change the PAN, etc. Even without updating the firmware the module sends and receives packets just fine.

Any suggestions on how to update the firmware?

Many thanks!
Jesse

On the adapter shorting these two pins will do a reset.

Thanks, I did attempt to reset the module using this method - but no luck. When shorting the two pins the green LED does stop blinking. After releasing them, blinking resumes. But XCTU still fails to update the firmware generating the same error message. "Could not enter programming mode - could not reset the module."

Any other thoughts?
