I found this book and can highly recommend it.
Well written by Jon Titus it starts with the basics and gives real practical experiments to help learn these devices.
It is written using the excellent Digi X-CTU program -- it seems better than the new Digi program (IMO)
The excellent Adafruit XBee Adapter Kit is a big help, too
