Light an LED when serial data is recieved.

Post by ExplosiveHippo »

Hello, I have a project with 2 Arduino UNOs and 2 Xbee modules and adapters. I was able to get the 2 devices talking to each other and have began to move onto the next part of my project idea. Basically I have a pulse sensor on one board and an LED on the other board. When I receive a heartbeat from the sensor I'm simply sending a message to the other Arduino "b"; however, this is being received as a 0 in the serial monitor of the other arduino. I've decided that this is fine since I just need to know when a signal is passed, it doesn't really matter the value. I'm just noting this in case it may be related.

Pulse Sensor main code:

Code: Select all

#include <SoftwareSerial.h>

/*
>> Pulse Sensor Amped 1.2 <<
This code is for Pulse Sensor Amped by Joel Murphy and Yury Gitman
    www.pulsesensor.com
    >>> Pulse Sensor purple wire goes to Analog Pin 0 <<<
Pulse Sensor sample aquisition and processing happens in the background via Timer 2 interrupt. 2mS sample rate.
PWM on pins 3 and 11 will not work when using this code, because we are using Timer 2!
The following variables are automatically updated:
Signal : int that holds the analog signal data straight from the sensor. updated every 2mS.
IBI : int that holds the time interval between beats. 2mS resolution.
BPM : int that holds the heart rate value, derived every beat, from averaging previous 10 IBI values.
QS : boolean that is made true whenever Pulse is found and BPM is updated. User must reset.
Pulse : boolean that is true when a heartbeat is sensed then false in time with pin13 LED going out.

This code is designed with output serial data to Processing sketch "PulseSensorAmped_Processing-xx"
The Processing sketch is a simple data visualizer.
All the work to find the heartbeat and determine the heartrate happens in the code below.
Pin 13 LED will blink with heartbeat.
If you want to use pin 13 for something else, adjust the interrupt handler
It will also fade an LED on pin fadePin with every beat. Put an LED and series resistor from fadePin to GND.

Code Version 1.2 by Joel Murphy & Yury Gitman Spring 2013
This update fixes the firstBeat and secondBeat flag usage so that realistic BPM is reported.

}// end isr

Receiver code:

Code: Select all

#include <SoftwareSerial.h>

SoftwareSerial mySerial = SoftwareSerial(2, 3);

void setup() {
  pinMode(13, OUTPUT);
  Serial.begin(115200);
  //Serial.println("Goodnight moon!");
  // set the data rate for the SoftwareSerial port
  mySerial.begin(115200);
  mySerial.println("Hello, world?");
}

void loop() // run over and over again
{
  int inByte;
  if (mySerial.available()) {
    inByte = mySerial.read();
    if(inByte == 0){
       digitalWrite(13,HIGH);
    }
  }

//  if (Serial.available()) {
//    mySerial.print(Serial.read());
//  }
  delay(100);

}
You can see in the interrupt code that when I receive a heart beat I send the message "b" through the serial port. On the receiver I'm getting a 0 though. So I simply say if the byte I recieved is a 0 to turn the LED on; however, the LED stays steady on the whole time. I can see the 0s in the serial monitor and they match up correctly to my heart rate...how can I do an action ONLY when an active pulse has come through?

You set the state of pin 13 to HIGH, but you never set it back to LOW again.

Ahhh. I tried that earlier and it didn't seem to work...all good now though. Thanks!
