Xbee Adapter Help

Postby Bridges-PdP » Wed Jan 14, 2009 8:25 pm

Hi,

I have assembled the Xbee Adapter and installed a series 2 radio module. FTDI drivers are setup and I have configured Hyperterm.

When I plug in the adapter, the green LED lights steadily, and does not blink. I do not get an 'OK' from HT after the +++.

Do you have any ideas for how I could troubleshoot the adapter?

Thanks,

Scott Bridges

i dont know much about series 2, the non-blinking LED might be OK
first, remove the radio and test that the power supply works, you should have 3.3v
second, try to connect with x-ctu, you might have to update the firmware!

Make sure your COM port is configured correctly, and that you have the baud rate set properly. (I believe all Xbees default to 9600-n-1 from the factory.) Then try using the "X-CTU" software, which you can download from dig's website, and use the button to "test/query" the Xbee. This will help you troubleshoot any cabling issues, and/or COM port settings. If that works you can use the "modem configuration" tab and have it "read" the settings from the XBee.

The first time I used an Xbee I couldn't get the +++ to work, and it ended up being the way i was typing it. You can't type any keys for a few seconds before the sequence. Also, the three '+' keys have to be pressed fairly quickly AND you may have to wait a second or two afterward (without pressing anymore keys) before you'll see the "OK" response.

Also - I believe that the LED on my series 2 devices blink, just like on the series 1's. So you may have an assembly defect on your adapter module. Double-check all the solder joints.

I hope that helps. If not post some pics, as I have several of these Adafruit Adapters, both real FTDI cables & the SparkFun FTDI/USB board, and several different type of Xbee Modules (series 1 & 2 in both standard and pro). We should be able to figure it out.

Cheers and good luck!!

Ok.

I've successfully communicated with both modules using X-CTU. The modules were configured as 'ZIGBEE ROUTER AT'. When I configured them as 'ZIGBEE COORDINATOR AT', I get a blinking LED. Are there any guidelines for which configuration profile to use for a give scenario?

I have one on an Xbee Shield and the other on the Xbee Adapter. I'm trying to test communication between them using the Arduino Xbee Guide. Still no luck getting the pin13 LED to come on as a successful test, but I persevere.

Thanks!

Make one of the devices the 'coordinator', and the others end points (i forgot the exact term used in XBee speak).

At that point all devices shouls be able to talk to each other, as long as the coordinator powered on. (This is the downfall of the V2 stuff - it requires 1 coordinator up & running for any communication - at least in my understanding.)

Same here: blinking green light represents coordinator. Solid green represents router end point of router. Same behavior using Arduino's Xbee shield, so seems to be a v2 thing. Red light is always off, even when upgrading firmware or transmitting to/from via X-CTU. Despite that, it's working flawlessly :P

btw, Xbee Series 2 datasheet has clear explanation of the new role of router/coordinator/end points on v2.
