Hi
I assembled the clock with out any problems and turned it on. It worked fine but I noticed that the brightness on the display was a bit lower. So I raised it (using the brightness button ofc ). When it reached the highest value the last 2 digits on the tube started to flicker. Then after a few seconds all digits started to flicker and I turned it off. Now when I turn it on the tube has no digits on and after a few minutes the speaker starts to make a shrieking sound.
Was there something defective in the kit cause since it worked fine for a few minutes that's what I think was wrong with it.
Any ideas what happened if this was not the case? What do I do know?
Thanks

Here u r.. sorry didn't have time to do it sooner... the pics are a bit "dirty" but I think you can still see properly. Also I tried to turn it on today and it worked like the first time.... as soon as I turned up the display brightness I got the same flickering and dieing ...

Ur talking about the slot where the tube's pins go in on the back of the pcb on the top left part just next to the hole (left side)?... no there was some dust there.. the connections are clear.adafruit wrote:is there a short on one of the VFD header pins?

I wanted to leave it at 5.5 but because you have to do a complete cycle when I reached 5.5 after a bit the digits started to dim down and flicker and then the speaker started to make a hish noise and then I unpluged it...

ok but then you plugged it in again, so what happens if you leave it alone?

If I leave it alone after half a minute the microprocessor makes a funny squiking electrical noise and then the beeper beeps continuously

ok let it calm down for an hour. then turn it on while continuously testing the 9V and 5V power supply just like when you first built it. write down what the voltages are until it stops working and then report back

Re: Hmmm Ice Tube died after 5 minutes of operation?
9V: starts from 8.97V and after 10 seconds approximately starts to fall 8.5 , 8.2, 8.1 etc until the speaker starts beeping at 4.7V (after 30 seconds). The voltage doesn't drop further then that
5V: is constantly 4.98-.97
5V: is constantly 4.98-.97

ok good work there!
does it matter what the brightness is set to? try putting it on the lowest brightness and repeat. obviously something is wrong but we want to see if we can isolate -what- is wrong

Sorry for the late reply. .free time is a rare commodity in our days
So I tried to do what you said (try to take some measurements in the lower brightness setting) BUT I didn't have time to get even into the menu. The same thing happens.. the clock dies after a few seconds after I turned it on (the same way I described in my above posts)

remove the VFD driver chip, try again
