This is a prototype of the Monochron case mod, as suggested earlier in this thread. It is made out of plywood from a Mandarin orange crate, as it was the right thickness, and pretty soft, so easy to work with.

First picture is the new front panel with the LCD board installed. Slots are for the modified side panels.

Modified side panels with short tabs that lock into the front panels. The panels were modified by grinding the long tabs off leaving just a short lower tab. The upper tabs were glued on.

After you add the clock board to the lcd board, the side, top, and bottom panels slip into place...

Then just slide the back panel into place, add the four screws, and plug it in.

Managed to break one of my side tabs within minutes of opening the box!

In my case, the piece that had been cut out of the slot was still in place in the slot held by the backing paper. The tab snapped when I tried to press it out with my finger.

My own fault but I used very little pressure :(

What glue is best for re-attaching broken pieces, will superglue be Ok?

Superglue will hold it, but it tends to fog the surface of the acrylic.

An acrylic-specific adhesive like IPS Weld-On #16 would be better. It is available in small tubes here. I'm sure there are similar products available in the UK. Check your local plastics supplier or sign shop.

for the 2-3 folks who broke off the tab(s) when putting it together, it's pretty rare so next order you place with us email [email protected] immediately after your order and specify exactly what side (maybe include a photo) you need, we'll toss it in your order.

cheers,

I think you're just not getting the rants.
Have broken 2 clocks out of 3.
Same tab.

My tabs are intact; I treated them with care, but no the extra-special care that I would have if I'd read this thread. The clock's been in my backpack for a couple of days now and held together (pack is a hardshell, the clock is assembled so it's more robust).

I also didn't assemble the case the suggested way. I knew I'd do a lot of debugging, so I soldered both programming connectors in to the back. This makes it impossible to slide on the back cover... so I attached the clock to the back cover using some extra plastic hex nuts as spacers, assembled the box around it, and then added some screws in from the front, but they aren't tightened down (because without a spacer that would crack the case).

Two other suggestions-
- the top and bottom should be interchangeable... I wanted to put the "monochrom" label proudly on the top side!
- increase the hole for the 9v plug a little - it's a bit of a tight fit. (that could be due to my unusual assembly, though...)
