connections all appear to be fine, other switches do stuff....menu does nothing
any thoughts?

So the display works? You just can't get into the menu?
Post some good clear photos of the front & rear of the board & we'll have a look.

my bad, cracked a weaker solder joint on the menu switch during case assembly......
works perfectly now....
