Ice tube clock kit time display

Postby blastoline » Wed Jan 25, 2012 7:34 pm

I assembled the kit and all the tests were flawless. I attached the tube and powered up the unit. Everything, all the displays, seem to work when the "menu, set and+" buttons are poked and prodded. When the "set" button is pushed after the seconds are set the clock does not advance the display.

I have double and triple checked the solder joints and they all seem fine. Thinking the watch crystal was suspect I replaced it with an ABT38T, 32.768khz watch crystal. There is no change in the behaviour of the display.

Question: in order to check the output of the crystal oscillator circuit, where on the board do I attach the oscilloscope leads.

Or is there another possible issue that I am overlooking.

Post photos of the front & back of the board that clearly show the area around the oscillator circuit.

You can probe the oscillator output on pin 9 of the Atmega processor. But be aware that the probe capacitance can affect the operation of the oscillator.

Soldering in that part of the circuit looks fine. You say you have replaced the crystal already? What does the oscilloscope say?

C8 and C9 are wrong, they should be orange discs, looks like the capacitors got mixed up

There were no orange, with a black stripe, capacitors in the parts pack like the ones that were shown in the assembly photos. I assumed they (orange and black caps) were superseded by the yellow caps that I received and installed.

What process do I follow to get the correct capacitors?

thanks

That's odd to hear because one of the orange capacitors is in spot C1 - where did you get this kit from? :?

I submitted a request for the correct capacitors for the crystal timing circuit. They were shipped and I received them very quickly. I removed the existing capacitors and replaced them with the correct orange and black striped capacitors.

Eureka!!! The clock advanced the time as it should.

My thanks to the technical support folks for resolving my issue quickly and efficiently.

I have bought and assembled a bulb dial kit and this ice tube kit and found the products to be very well made and high on the "cool factor". Would buy another product from Adafruit without hesitation.

Thanks again.

I purchased the kit through The Robotshop in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada.

There were only yellow capacitors that came in the kit, not a single orange with a black stripe.

Thanks again for the great customer service.

You've said that, but C1 is an orange capacitor. Where did that come from? We're trying to track down what happened but the information you're giving us doesn't match up with the photos you took
