I don't have a spare battery in that size, but I did test the voltage. It came in at about 3.247VDC. Here are some pictures showing the front, back, and wired in the project.

Also, after reading up on this particular chip I noticed that some people say that the crystal needs to be grounded. Has this been your experience?

I've never heard of such a thing with this board.

The ds1307 can go haywire if the power and/or ground connections are flaky. Try moving it around in your breadboard, try some different jumpers, too.

I don't know where you took your battery voltage reading, but; Did you put a dab of solder on the negative battery pad of the board. Sometimes no solder or excessive flux can give a bad connection.

I am also experiencing the same problem described by the OP.

I have tested the battery pins at the DS1307 and found them to be around 3.45 V. I also tested across the Vin and GND pins and found them to be 4.96 V. The issue is not my connection to the Arduino or a faulty battery.

Here is a picture of my soldering:

Any assistance is appreciated.

It looks like you have quite a bit of burnt flux around the crystal. Burnt flux can become conductive enough to affect crystal operation. Try cleaning the board with some 90% or better isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush.

I scrubbed with 70% IPA for a minute and it works!

Thank you for the help!

I am trying to use this on a Pi. I don't see my device (0x68) with i2cdetect. I am pretty sure that the Pi is configured for I2C since I have used I2C to communicate with Arduino.

Please post clear, detailed pictures of the DS1307, showing your soldering. Also post pictures showing your connections to the Pi

adafruit_support_rick, While waiting for my wife's camera. I did something unusual I read the documentation. Clipped the resisters and bingo I2C.. Your support team may be the best but they can't fix a user how don't listen(read). All the best. Tim
