timesquare's time wont update

Post by baileygrib »

Hi i just recently built my timesquare watch and i set the time and everything but when i went to check the time about an hour or so later, the time never changed. The attachment is a picture of the circuit board. Please reply if you know how to fix it or if i need to take a better picture. Thanks!

A better picture would be helpful, yeah. Kinda blurry.

By "time never changed," do you mean it's stuck on the time you had set, or is it reverting to a default time (e.g. 12:00)? If the former, I'd suspect something around the 32 KHz crystal (the small silver tube). The 'legs' are really thin...make sure they aren't touching each other or one hasn't broken off.

Yeah, maybe snap a photo from a little further away. Small but in focus is still better than big & blurry. Or if you have a flatbed scanner, that can work too. But regardless, near as I can tell from the current photo, the crystal looks intact and the soldering looks competent.

Anyway, question still stands: is it sticking on the time you entered, or some other default time?

Okay. The clock chip itself is probably fine then, the MCU is reading & writing to it.

If you have a multimeter, I'd suggest checking the continuity between each leg of the crystal and pins 1 & 2 of the RTC chip (the 2 pins closest to the base of the crystal), as well as checking for a short between those two pins. Check the legs carefully at the base of the crystal...they could get cracked or pulled out when bending it to lie flat.

Continuity was good through the crystal leads and the legs on the chip are soldered fine.

Could it be a software issue?

Doesn't seem likely...the watches are all programmed with the same code, and this is the first time this symptom has been reported.

Thanks for working through the continuity tests. At this point, I can only figure it's a bum clock chip or crystal. Please email [email protected] and include a link to this post, and we'll set you up with a replacement.
