Watch crystal in ice tube kit

Post by alter »

Anyone know how durable this thing is? I'm trying to run down issues with my clock not displaying time. All signs seem to point to the crystal and the 20pF capacitors. I've removed solder, resoldered again and again with no luck and I'm wondering if I might have damaged the crystal somehow.

Yes. It is possible to damage the crystal with too much heat. What is the issue? Clock displays but does not update the time?

Yep, that's it in a nutshell.

Any recommended sources for getting new crystals?

If this is one of our kits, we can replace it. But first let's take a look at the rest of the build to make sure there aren't any other contributing factors. If you post clear photos of the front & back of the main board we'll check it over.

Hope these pics are helpful for diagnosis. I think I really botched the soldering of the crystal, there's a blob of solder on top of the board next to each lead.

I think I really botched the soldering of the crystal, there's a blob of solder on top of the board next to each lead.
With the thin leads on those crystals, that is easy to do. The trick is to heat the solder pad first. When that is hot enough to melt the solder, then let it flow onto the crystal leads.

Contact support with a link to this thread and ask for a replacement crystal. In the mean-time, remove the old one and clean up the excess solder. Some solder-wick might be helpful there. http://www.adafruit.com/products/149
