No Beep, Display Off.

Post by marioe1 »

Passed first two tests, after installing C5, MAX chip, R3 and Q3 there is no longer a beep and tube does not light up. Q3 is in "reverse" (text on curved side).

Voltage for booster conv. still @ around 60v w/ chip in place. PLEASE HELP

I assume you are talking about an Ice Tube. Post photos of the front & back of the board and we'll check it over.

Very clean build. Nice soldering job! The color bands on R1 & R2 look a little strange - I suspect it is just the lighting in the photo, but double check against the parts list anyhow.

That is unusual. Typically 'no beep' means that the microprocessor is not running. But if the microprocessor is not running, there should be no boost either. :?
Also, the boost voltage typically drops a bit when the chip is installed.

Remove the tube board and (carefully!) remove the VFD chip and re-check all your voltages - and see if the beep comes back.

What is the best way of removing the VFD chip? it's really in there and I don't want to break it.

There are two slots in the socket on opposite corners. With a small hook in the end of a paperclip wire, you should be able to get underneath and gently lift it out. Work it from both sides so it comes out as straight as possible.

I removed VFD chip and ran test again

1st test positive on first pin of 7805. I read 95V
positive on third pin of 7805. ALMOST NO READING AT ALL

No Beep

Boost converter voltage at 67V

Is there anything else I should be checking?

:!: 95v  Are you sure that isn't 9.5v?
positive on third pin of 7805. ALMOST NO READING AT ALL
Not a good sign at all!
No Beep

Boost converter voltage at 67V
Hmmm. That makes me think that the 95v might be true.

:!: Very carefully (these are high voltages here) :!: re-confirm that first voltage reading. If your adapter wen't bad, it may have taken out the rest of the board.

Double checked, the voltage is still at 95V

OK then. Unplug the adapter. Cut the cord off and and toss the adapter in the trash. I'm going to assume that the rest of the board is fried.

Contact [email protected] and we can send you a new Ice Tube kit.
