Good First Soldering Project?

Post by adrosen »

My 16 year old son wants to build the ice cube clock. This would be his first project and I noticed that it requires a fair amount of soldering which he has never done before. My worry is that, without previous experience he'll ruin some of the components. What's the best way to get him some experience soldering and would this be the best project for him to start with?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

The Ice Tube has some challenging soldering. You might want to start with a practice project.
The Make Soldering badge is an easy one to start with: http://www.adafruit.com/products/496

There are also some fairly simple kits, including:
the MintyBoost: http://www.adafruit.com/products/14
The TV-B-Gone http://www.adafruit.com/products/73
The MiniPOV: http://www.adafruit.com/products/20

I'd also recommend reading through our soldering guide before starting: http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guid ... -soldering

Another project that I think is easy to put together is the usbtinyisp http://learn.adafruit.com/usbtinyisp and on the plus side is you have something that can program the icetube clock chip (and other chips) if it is desired to experiment or use a different firmware version at some point later in the clock.

I would also study Adafruits learn pages on soldering. http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guid ... -soldering
There are excellent examples of how to solder properly and what good and bad solder joints look like.
