LEGO for SMT

Post by isozee »

LEGO's blue bucket contains many small blocks and their width is 8 mm. So using such blocks 8mm tape block is assembled.
First to make tape sliding base 1mm cut of the block surface is necessary. If you have a milling machine it is easy but if not use a hand tool as Proxxson as shown below.

After assembled blocks, to peel off cover tape 3mm width 0.2mm thick stainless steel strips or 1mm dis steel bars are glued on the block as shown.

Cut top of blocks approx 1mm to make tape sliding blocks. Be careful to harm fingers.

isozee - very cool stuff!

Would this work with an old ECM93? I don't think the '93 can "pull the tape"

No ECM93 can not pull the cut tape but it can picks component up from exposed pockets as a tray feeder as shown below.

Yes 16mm,24mm and (2 of ) 12mm are possible. 16=2 x 8 and 24=3 x 8 so easy and just glue used 8mm paper tape as tape slide guides. 12mm need some machining to make center guide as shown.

that's pure DIY spirit and shows that simple means can be used and applied to expensive / complex PnP machine. MDC / Manncorp machines are perfect candidates for this sort of hacks as they are still easy to put your hands into.
Congrats !
