Adafruit's old off-the-shelf hotplate

Post by ericwertz »

I'm pretty sure that I remember 2-3 years ago on AAE that LadyAda was pretty pleased with the performance of one (maybe two) of the hotplates that she bought off-the-shelf, but I'm unable to find any references to it. I was wondering what brand/model she had that were performing well. There's only one off-the-shelf one that I'm finding out there and it's in the $400 range, which is in my price range. While I'd be interested in at least seeing anything else under $1000, I don't care about anything that's over $1K.

I'm also not interested in considering a T962 oven as I've heard nothing good about them out-of-the-box. So much work has to be done on them to make them usable, and I don't need another such "project" right now in my pile.

tkx!

it was something from madell, but can't remember the part number anymore - it wasnt *that* great. the best DIY we've seen is a black & decker IR toaster oven

with some sort of control. YMMV

Interesting -- my recollection was that it was said to work pretty well... but that can't possibly be the case if it was from Madell... :-)

I'm trying to go lead free and I'm not sure if my current skillet can hack it. Won't know for sure one way or another until the solder paste gets here though.
Too many of the toaster ovens seem to suffer from hotspots (like the T962 which is supposedly designed for this very task), but I'll have to give this one a look-see.

Many thanks again for getting back to me, as you always do!

There is a company that offers an upgrade kit for the T962[A], including new firmware, Kaptan tape to replace the masking tape. They can also sell you a T962[A] with their upgrade added (but not this week, they are all out).

A couple DIY P&P projects have emerged recently:

and

http://www.liteplacer.com/?gclid=CjwKEA ... oCbV7w_wcB

(The latter is available as kit for $1299 (€1199)

I saw one DIY pick&place that could exchange nozzles automatically, and another that could lay down the soldering paste in a separate pass. A lot has happened in the last year.
