Weller WHS M in U.S. ? (vs Hakko 888D)

by markmoran on Sat Mar 02, 2013 1:53 am

I have a SparkFun soldering station and am considering upgrading to the Hakko FX-888D. But I've seen several YouTube videos (e.g. showing a much thinner and slicker looking soldering iron. I believe it is the Weller WHS M, but I can only find it sold in Europe (including, so I assume it only works on 240V power? It also seems much more expensive than the Hakko. Is there an American version of this soldering iron, or is there a thinner pencil style wand available for Hakko?

Thanks for any thoughts.

You dont want it -too- thin or its hard to grip, the 888D's wand is really great!

Hakko 888D is a piece of art, heavy and well designed, and serves my soldering needs.

I too love my Hakko 888D. It heats up from room temp to 700 I'm about 30 seconds. Really pretty awesome.
