Newbie: Can't melt solder 2nd time using Hakko FX-888D

Post by labgoat »

Hi folks, I'm brand new to soldering. I soldered for the first time today using a brand new Hakko FX-888D and it all went fine. i did the 16 joints on the 8x8 LED matrix backpack using lead-free solder at 750 degrees. When I was finished, I tried re-tinning the tip and then turned off the iron.

I came back a little later to solder the 4 header pins on, turned the iron on and let it heat up, but I can no longer get the iron to even melt the solder even though it says it's at 750 (and I do feel heat through the handle). I've tried cleaning the tip, but to no avail. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Could you post a photo of the tip? There should be no reason the iron does not work. Check to see if the collar around the tip is tight (when the iron is cool obviously) and that the cord is fully plugged into the base. If you rub the tip on a wet sponge does it sizzle?
