I'm just starting out in electronics: as such I understand and see that a good helping hands is an important and necessary tool. However most of the ones I see appear to be cheap and I believe the alligator clips will break or wear out quite easily.
Here is what I am looking for and I hope that someone out there can suggest a brand/model that comes close to what I want.
I would prefer they be steel construction not aluminum.
I don't need any fancy additions such as a soldering iron holder, etc.
Given that I'm visually impaired I would like to get as much magnification from a single lense as possible. Prefer Glass lense not a polycarbonate or plastic.
A good solid weighted base. No suction types or clamp types. Screw holes a plus but not necessary.
Thanks in advance!

The only ones I've seen that aren't based on gator clips are professional jeweler tools, and cost the proverbial arm and leg. Case in point:

Those look solid lol
I don't mind something with alligator clips. I just don't want the common cheap o' Made in China stuff you mostly see.
I would really like something lighted with great magnification too!

Re: Help finding ideal Helping Hands
I bought the ones that they sell here - https://www.adafruit.com/products/291 It's the SE MZ101
I know it's only $6.00, but, I'd look for something else. This one is pretty worthless. The base is just not heavy enough. If you extend anything much beyond the base, the whole thing tips over. Trying to figure out how I can add some weight to this thing so I can at least get some use out if it.

For $6 it's a great deal. You could screw it down to a heavier base like the PanaVise or clamp it to your bench. You could also spend more and get yourself something that suited your needs better. If you bought it recently we can give you a refund. Email [email protected] with a link to this thread for help with that.
