Function Generators

Post by starwriter34 »

I recently bought a Rigol DS1054Z Oscilloscope and need to get a function generator for school. I am mainly looking in the $300-600 range and I am at a loss in what to get. I see threads all the time on beginning scopes but never any on function generators. Any help would be appreciated.

It depends on the kind of signals you need to generate.

For basic IO testing, Mouser and Digikey both carry a range of B&K Precision function generators in the price range you mentioned. The single channel fixed-function ones (square, sine, triangle, sawtooth, pulse) are near $300.

I happen to have a B&K 4053 dual channel arbitary function generator that works well. It does all the standard waves, but also does noise, bursts, modulation, frequency sweeps (handy for testing frequency response) and can store/play programmed waveforms. I have the 10MHz version which goes for about $600, but there's also a 5MHz version for about $500.

If you need something specific, like RF frequencies, that's a whole other line of equipment.
