General consensus on the XY-258?

Post by marine_hm »

I am just a novice hobyist. I have small chip just a bit bigger than a postage stamp that needs 7 header pins connected to it. Will the XY-258 soldering iron work for this project straight out of the box or should I get a smaller tip?

Since this is adjustable, about what temp? I'm using 60/40 .032 rosin core. Your expertise please!!!?

The size of the chip is not as important as the pitch of the pins. If they are much closer than 0.1", you may want to get a finer point tip.

For most soldering with 60/40, I use a tip temperature of 700F. But having a clean and tinned tip is more important than having an exact temperature.

What are the available temps for the 258?
Bill; should I use a different solder size? To coorelate with the temps available on the XY i mean.

The XY-258 is adjustable, but has no temperature feedback. I find that for most work with 60/40 solder, about 3/4 of the max setting works nicely. For lead-free, I'd go closer to the highest setting. The .032 size should be fine.
