DSO Nano V3 - Dead after first recharge

Post by SOzy »

A coworker purchased the DSO Nano V3 for use in the field as a quick reference device. It worked fine when we first received it on 1/26, I spent an hour or two learning how to use it and had no issues. That was the one and only time we used it until we tried powering it on yesterday and found it was no longer working. Assuming the battery was dead, my coworker plugged it into his PC to charge and left it there overnight. Today when he unplugged it and turned it on, the battery meter displayed "USB" instead of a charge level. Since then, after several dozen attempts, we've been unable to get it to power on again. Plugging it into the PC again now results in an error message of "USB Device Not Recognized".

We opened the unit to inspect for any damage or loose connections and found nothing visibly damaged, though there was a strong scent of blue smoke lingering inside. Closer inspection, or sniffing, seems to pinpoint the source of the scent as the LiPo cell attached to the back cover. After leaving the unit open for an hour, the smoke smell is mostly gone from the PCB, but the battery still reeks.

This seems somewhat related to other reported issues with these mini-scopes, where problems manifest themselves after charging the unit. Some others seem to have been able to fix things by performing a firmware update, however with our unit failing to power up or be recognized by windows, that is not an option for us. Please advise.

That does sound like a hardware failure, and you're within our 30-day return/replace period.

Send a note to [email protected] with a link to this thread and the folks there will get you a replacement.
