Trinket with Dotstar

I am using a 5v (basic)Trinket with a 30 led Dotstar strip. On the trinket my pins are 0 for clock and 2 for data.
The Dotstar strip lights up (less brightly) with just pin 0, pin 2 and the ground connected. When I connect my separate 5 Volt power supply to Gnd and Vcc it lights up brightly. I don't understand why the Dotstar is lighting up without the Vcc connection. Should I be using other pins on the trinket or a different version of the trinket. Will this behavior damage the trinket 0 or 2 pins?

Your connections to the trinket are correct. This won't damage anything.
