Is it possible to control 8806 light strip with DMX-512?

Postby jhaus515 » Tue May 15, 2012 5:28 pm

I'm undertaking a massive project/learning experience and been searching around for information but cannot find what I'm looking for. Basically what I would like to do is build a custom low resolution RGB LED screen using multiple strands of LPD8806 LED light strips that are controlled via a DMX-512 computer program such as MADRIX. MADRIX is able to output pictures, videos, etc. over a USB to DMX connection. How can I convert DMX to the LPD8806 IC? Is it possible for the DMX-512 and 8806 IC to "talk" to each other in order to map the pixels across the strands of light strips? Any guidance and help is greatly appreciated! :D

Howdy,

We don't have anything at present to bridge DMX to LPD8806 strips. If you're interested in wrangling some software yourself, we do have some starter code in the Adalight project. Might also want to look at PixelInvaders.

Thank you both for the links! All of this is confusing but these links have set me on the right direction for what I want to accomplish.

I hope your project is going well and you eventually found the answer you needed. If not, the chip I am using to receive DMX on the Arduino is the MAX485 (and some code for the hardware interrupts). There is a theatrical supplier that makes a DMX shield with screw-downs you might look into:

He also has some code examples to help get you up and running.
