Some basic adalight/ambient questions to help me decide if I can do this or not

Postby bbtb » Tue Feb 07, 2012 6:11 am

Hi all, up until last night I had never even hear of ambilight, adalight etc but im facsinated with the effect it has!

So a few questions to get me started...

1. Can I do this with my TV without a pc? If I need a pc what sort of mimum spec would i need?
2. If i hook up my tv to this will i be able to play games, watch tv from sky box, memory sticks etc.. at present everything runs through my surround sound amp.. would that be ok?
3. can you buy fully ready made kits?
4. Can you buy kits that have the soldering done but I do the rest?

Cheers in advance.. hopefully that will give me a starting point to see what sort of help i would need, cost etc..

Cheers

Howdy! To answer your questions:

1.This does require a PC; there's no standalone version. It can run on a low-spec box like an Atom PC, but the results are a bit choppy. I think something equivalent to a Core Duo or better could probably handle it.
2. Not familiar with Sky Box. Basically, most (but not necessarily all) content that's originating from the PC can get the Adalight effect. There's no "pass through" for other consoles or media boxes, but things like MPEG playback and many games work (certain hardware-accelerated things like banned playback or some games may not work, but if you search the forums users have found workarounds for certain cases).
3. Nope, kit only.
4. There's no solderless version available. The amount of soldering is pretty minor though, so if you know an electronics person they might be willing to help out.

I am not sure if it will work, but perhaps something like Dscaler running on a PC would allow a person to take an input from Sky or a console and then output it to a TV. This could allow the adalight to perform it's magic. It would just require a capture card or input for your type.

It would still require a PC
