Check the Serial Ports… menu item in the Tools menu. If you've moved the Arduino around, the modem name may have changed.

We're trying to help. See our previous two messages.
Did you or did you not check the serial port selection?

OK. You gave us this error message:
avrdude: ser_open(): can't open device "/dev/tty.usbmodemfd121": No such file or directory"
That means that there's something wrong with the way you have the Atmega32U4 attached to your Mac.
Try this: Unplug the 32u4 board, and look in the Arduino "Tools:Serial Ports…" menu item. You should see some things like /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Modem and /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem.You should *not* see /dev/tty.usbmodemfd121 listed.

Next, close the menu and plug in your 32U4 board. Look at the Arduino "Tools:Serial Ports…" menu item again, and you should now see two new entries in the list. They will be of the form "/dev/tty.usbmodemfdxxxxx" and "/dev/cu.usbmodemfdxxxxx", where the 'xxxxx' is some string of digits. This will be your 32U4 board. Select the line that looks like "/dev/tty.usbmodemfdxxxxx". (Do NOT select the "/dev/cu…" line).

If you do NOT see the two new entries in the list, then your 32U4 is not properly connected to the Mac. Check the connection. If it looks OK, then try a different USB cable.

Once you have the board properly connected and the correct Serial Port selected, then you can try to upload your sketch. Remember to push the Reset button on the 32U4 immediately before uploading.

This is what I got when I uploaded the code

"Binary sketch size: 7536 bytes (of a 28672 byte maximum)
Connecting to programmer: .
Found programmer: Id = "LUFACDC"; type = S
Software Version = 1.0; No Hardware Version given.
Programmer supports auto addr increment.
Programmer supports buffered memory access with buffersize=128 bytes.

Programmer supports the following devices:
Device code: 0x44 "

Also I may note that when I connect 5v directly to the led strip it lights up

Great! That's what you should be seeing. Your sketch has been loaded.
