Are all the neopixel products using the same smd LED?

Post by SirPoonga »

I was wonder if all of the neopixel products that use a smd led are using the same LED, thus there would be consistency in brightness, color, etc... across different products. For example, will an individual led on the 144/m strip have the same brightness as mini PCB pixel?

There are at least three different incarnations of the neopixel that have been produced over time so there is no guarentee the values will be exactly the same. You may be able to set a compensation value to balance them though.

Ok, I get that. So do you think the 144/m led strip leds are just as bright as pixels - at least relatively close? You can't tell from pics due to the exposure of the camera.

In one of the notes comparing the original WS2812 to the current WS2812B, one of the bullet points in the pdf mentions the WS2812B is that the LED is brighter and the color more uniform than in the original WS2812's (http://acrobotic.com/datasheets/WS2812B_VS_WS2812.pdf). The company world-semi.com seems to be the maker of WS2812 and WS2812B's.

Recently, Sparkfun has started shipping LEDS made by APA Electronic co (http://acrobotic.com/datasheets/WS2812B_VS_WS2812.pdf) that claim to use the same protocol as the WS2812B's. Note, the APA leds want power in the range 4.5 - 6v, while the WS2812B's are 3.5 - 5.3v. Who knows if the APA leds are the same brightness as the World Semi leds.
