Where to solder LED strip

Post by JBnoob »

So I recently purchased this led strip from Adafruit in order to make the vu meter hat project.

1 x Adafruit NeoPixel Digital RGB LED Strip 144 LED - 1m Black (BLACK)
[ID:1506] = $59.95

However, the strip that I received looks different than the one in the tutorial- there are no holes/ pads, and I have no idea where to cut and solder these. Am I missing something? This is my first project w/ this, so sorry if it's a silly question. Thanks!

you would cut here Could you post a better lit picture of the back of the strip? I'll see if anyone knows of a change in the new strips.

Will do when I get home. It's just plain black.

That's what I figured, but the strip in the tutorial/ that I bought are supposed to have that btw each led and it doesn't, so I can't cut up the strip...

Our vendor changes details like the pattern of pads on the strip occasionally. You got a strip with 144 pixels per meter, but you're right that it will be a little harder to cut and reconnect.

You can still connect segments with that kind of strip, but you'll need to solder directly to the NeoPixel connections:

If you'd rather not try that, we can arrange a return/refund.

Yea, I think that would get messy with the design I want to do. I'd rather return it, but I cut the silicone off...

It did get changed on us, we are reshooting it now - we purchase the same thing from the factory so if you return it for replacement you'll get the exact same thing! however, you can return for a refund if you'd like - just email support@adafruit

Would you be able to update the instructions on using segments of a strip? Also your image doesn't indicate that the lower pin (pin 4) is data in and the upper pin (pin 2) is data out.
