Is this the correct way to power this new pixel circuit?

Post by sgttoe »

I am new to all of this and teaching myself. Please tell me if this is correct, I don't want to apply the power till I know it is correct.
I had this working powered from computer, now I want to power it with the power supply I purchased from Adafruit.

1. (Left Side) two black wires connecting the sleeve to the - power buss.
2 (Left Side) red wire connecting pin to + power buss.
3 (Left Side) 4700uF cap crossing - and + busses.
4 (Right side) white wire from - power buss to Gnd pin on Trinket.

Thanks

What are you plugging into the barrel jack? Also not sure what you are doing with the LEDs and where the plus power is going to the Trinket.

Plugging 5v 2A Power Supply #276 into the barrel jack.

Oops yes, plus power would go from the + buss to the +5v below PB2 right?

The leds should be wired correctly, I had it working when I had the trinket being powered via usb from my pc.

Plus power should go to bal+ according to this https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... uided-tour The 5v is an output from the Trinket.

Thanks, I hooked up the plus power bus to the Bat+ but nothing, no lights on the trinket, nothing. so tonight I will get out my multi meter and check that the power supply is good and verify my solders are good on the trinket pins.

Another question: I noticed that none of the Learn projects seem to use a 470 ohm resistor before the first led on the data pin, I also noticed the same for using a large cap on the power. Yet both are mentioned in the best practices. Why is it the learn projects don't seem to follow the best practices?

Some of them were made before the problem with power was discovered and the problem only happens with external power supplies that are not well regulated and used with large strings of Neopixels. It's always better to err on the safe side so I will recommend you use them to be safer.
