Want to make a sunrise alarm-clock... How bright are these L

Post by realityinabox »

I want to make a sunrise alarm clock, and am wondering whether the 'Super Bright 5mm LEDs' would be bright enough to illuminate a dark room. I am also wondering about the LED backlights.

If anyone has any experience with these, and could tell me how bright they are relative to a dark room, I'm be really appreciative.

edit: I realize that I'd probably need an array of either option, but am still wondering on the relative brightness.

These are bright as 5mm LEDs go. And about 5x more efficient than an equivalent incandescent. But they are pretty small and the total light output is about that of a candle. You would need a total of about 12 watts of LED power to match the total light output of a 60 Watt lightbulb.

Each one of these runs at about 3.2v @ 20mA or 0.064 watts each. A 14x14 array of these would be about 12.5 Watts.
