powering an LED strip from an UNO - dangerous?

Post by plantarum »

Hi,

I just got my LPD8806 (2m) LED strip. I realise now that I don't have a separate 5V power supply to hook it up to. The tutorials indicate that it's a bad idea to connect it directly to the Uno 5V.

Is this because it will damage the Uno and/or the strip, or just because the Uno doesn't deliver enough current? I don't mind the LEDs being under-powered for a quick test, but I wouldn't want to break something.

Thanks!

You run the risk of damaging the Uno regulator so I would not recommend it. Get the proper power supply and enjoy.
