Digital LED Strip x RPi - keeping them off by default

Post by njonas »

This is probably a super noob question but I have a RPi controlling a strip of 8 Digital RGB LEDs (https://learn.adafruit.com/digital-led-strip?view=all) through a python script. As soon as I give the circuit voltage, a variable amount of LEDs turn on by default (sometimes none, sometimes a few, sometimes all of them).

1) Why is this?

2) How can I keep them off by default until they are addressed? It sounds like a transistor is what I need - could you please provide some info on what kind to get?

They power up in a random state. I don't think there's any way to prevent this.
