Thanks to adafruit I have developed the "why buy when I could make" thinking. What is the best way to power super bright LED's and what is the brightest and whitest LED money can buy? Looking to make something like the link below.

You can run it directly off a couple of AA batteries. You can also use a LiPo, but you need a 3.3v voltage regulator and a 1.5 Ohm resistor in series with the LED.

I would head over to an LED manufacturer website such as Cree. They make lots of different LEDs - for example, the XM-L series can be driven at up to 10 watts, which yields up to 1000 lumens. Note that you will need a good driver and heatsinking for high-power leds.
