RGB LCD 16X2 monochromic display

I purchased the 16X2 LCD +5 button keypad shield. I am running the hello world example script with the backlight set to red. It is attached to my arduino Uno and it powers up, but it wont display characters, it appears as if the buttons work because they can turn the screen on and off (up and down are on and right and left are off). If I adjust the the brightness pot I can see the first row of pixels light up very light.

I even removed all of the headers and re-soldered them just to make sure that it was not a connection issue.

None of the pin solders are shorted out. I just dont know whats going on here. Is this thing defective?

Take a look at the Soldering Guide and redo the solder joints. Nothing may be shorting but there are several pins that may not be connecting. Let us know how it goes after you resolder.
