Power on/off? HDMI 5" w/ touchscreen 800x480

Post by subatomic »

Hi, just received this and it's really cool:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-5-8 ... k?view=all

Once I get this installed into a case, I'd like to be able to flip the display on/off with a SPDT switch... What do you recommend?
My first thought is to hack into a USB cable and put a switch on one of those lines...

What do you think?

Are there any traces on the back of the board which I could cut & tap into? That might be easier for me...

You know, I knew we had to have something like this in the store. I just found it:

Problem for the HID mouse interface...:
"The data lines are not connected through - this is a ground/5V power switch only!"

But it looks like I can cut/hack this USB power trace on the board to solder in an SPST custom switch of my choosing...

Question:
When screensaver kicks on, then the powersave feature, i see the backlight go out, is the screen effectively "off" then?
If so, what does 'off' mean exactly... is it pretty safe for long term running (i.e. sitting on 24hrs a day in a rack of gear)?
If so, then I probably dont even need an SPST switch at all, and then I can rely on the OS powersave feature... :)

'Off' is just the backlight. But there's no reason you can't leave it running 24/7

I noticed when 'off' in powersave mode, there is also a blinking red light, but otherwise, no light emitting components running... probably the microcontroller running, but this works for me. :)
