Do I need the console usb cable. Or will a regular usb cable suffice ? Also is it possible to access it via ethernet when it starts up or is further config required via console ?

The Console Cable falls under 'nice to have', but isn't necessary.

The BBB is configured so you can make a TCP/IP connection through the USB cable (kind of a neat trick, actually), and once you've done some network configuration you can log in via Ethernet. The BBB also knows how to use most common wifi adapters, so you can make wireless TCP/IP connections that way once you have that interface configured.

The advantage of the Console Cable is that it connects to the hardware UART. It works even if you don't have a network connection or are having trouble with the USB-network driver.

Ha! So this means I can buy a Beaglebone Black Rev C, connect it to my linux laptop USB-USB, boot up and log into the Beaglebone via a command line terminal window on the laptop?

Yep. The USB network connection is the standard way of logging in.
