The tutorial by Justin Cooper, 'Setting up IO Python Library on BeagleBone Black'
points out, "This tutorial is written for Angstrom and Ubuntu installations only at this time." My question is, 'Will the directions apply to the Debian flavor that is currently shipping on the BBB from Adafruit?' If not, what work around is possible short of ditching Debian to use Angstrom or Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a specific flavor of Debian, so it should work.

Yup, Debian should work just fine. I've updated some of the copy in the tutorial to make that a bit more clear.
