BBB Rev C Will not flash EMMC with 2015-03-01

Post by embedded »

I have an Element 14 Beagle Bone Black Rev C adafru.it/1996 made by Element 14 sold to me in your Adafruit beagle bone starter pack/703 A6. Serial number is EM-400534 XA9001339 Pass XR LLL.

OK I have tried everything including looking at it sharply and going through the beagle bone archives. I have tried with debian image 03-01-2015 "latest image" and tried every conceivable method including pushing boot and reset. All 4 lights come on during boot then id.txt is "BeagleBoard.org Debian Image 2015-03-01" much later obviously it booted (4 lights came on to start with) from the SD card and it running but never flashed (the four lights never came on at the end). I remove power and reboot with no flash card. Then id.txt is ""BeagleBoard.org BeagleBone Debian Image 2014-04-23" obviously flasher is not running. (Cards are generic 16G C10 and C4 which test properly)

I have read that you need the aux power supply and used the one Adafruit provided. I have used every conceivable arrangement of pushing buttons with boot. Evidently the SD card booted because it ran Debian with the ID.txt "03-01-2015" but equally evidently it never flashed.

I am a Electrical Engineer who does Linux but have not compiled a Beaglebone image. So this is a little new to me.

What am I missing??? Following directions to the letter has provided no joy. I certainly would like to see the pattern of lights for the first 120 seconds of flashing. I understand a 16G Tsop works for the 4 gig EEC image and Class 4 and 10 would be immaterial.

The closest thing I have seen is your direction to an older image.

Regards John

Does the problem only occur for that version of the OS, or is it a general 'eMMC won't flash' thing?

Hello

I have only tried this OS. Debian (BeagleBone, BeagleBone Black - 4GB SD) 2015-03-01 - more info - BANNED - md5: c848627722b7a5f7bc89791cc8949e3b)
I found this that the Beaglebone starters guide points to.
"Flashing eMMC on Elinuix.g". Naturally there is nothing in /boot/uEnv.txt that looks like this on Either Debian that is on the eMMC or the 2015-03-01 image. Perhaps this is old information.

I also found : BBB-eMMC-flasher-debian-7.8-lxde-armhf-2015-03-01-2gb.img.xz which appears to be a 2gb image instead of the 4GB image.

I read Adafruits user guide and it is somewhat dated.

So perhaps you can direct me to a known good image for BBB REV C and any particular directions to flash it beyond push the boot key down with your thumbnail.

Regards John

From Elinux.org:
"To setup the standalone microSD image to automatically flash the eMMC on powerup.

In /boot/uEnv.txt:

##enable BBB: eMMC Flasher:
#cmdline=init=/opt/scripts/tools/eMMC/init-eMMC-flasher-v3.sh

Change to:

##enable BBB: eMMC Flasher:
cmdline=init=/opt/scripts/tools/eMMC/init-eMMC-flasher-v3.sh

and reboot the system, it'll flash the eMMC on the next bootup. (make sure to remove the microSD after flashing is complete)

BBB (All Revs) eMMC Flashers

Flasher: (lxde) (159Mb free on 2GB eMMC) (Due to limited space, the default Web Browser is NOT installed in the 2GB image.)

The official images are on the CircuitCo website: http://beagleboard.org/latest-images

The official instructions for flashing the eMMC are on the Getting Started page: http://beagleboard.org/getting-started#update

The process really is as simple as pushing the button and waiting. If the process doesn't work, it's possible that you have a bad eMMC. The makers of the boards handle all replacements and RMAs directly, and the contact information for the element14 version is at: http://www.embest-tech.com/technical-su ... t-support/

Actually the latest images that flash are not on "The official images are on the CircuitCo website: http://beagleboard.org/latest-images" Instead this appears to be the standalone sd card image it is not intended to flash and following the instructions for /boot/uEnv.txt appear to be completely obsolete.

Instead they appear to be on http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian. Likely the current flasher image to replace the shipped image should be unequivocally mentioned in the Adafruit document and on the Latest Images page. They are certainly not in the http://beagleboard.org/getting-started#update

It would appear that this one is the BBB Rev C intended flasher.
BBB Rev C (4GB eMMC) 4GB eMMC Flasher

Flasher: (lxde-4gb)

All I was looking for was is this the correct image? (Because the factory installed image is the same lxde image with a different date on it.)

The best source for official information about the BBB is the CircuitCo forum: http://beagleboard.org/Community/Forums

Those are the folks who develop the OS images used in the factory, so their information will be more up to date than mine.

John, I had the same problem finding the image. The flasher images were on the distro page until a couple of weeks ago and when I went to grab it, they only had the SD card image. I chased around for several days until I found the same one you did and it flashed just fine.
