I know nothing about electronics:
I have bought a Adafruit Ultimate GPS v3 board to build a raspberry pi statrum 1 time source (with PPS). I'd like to connect it to the pi without using a breadboard, just some jumper wires from the GPS board to the GPIO. I gather this is the pin out:
GPS - Pi
========
TX - RXD
PPS - Pin 23
Ground - Ground
VIN - 5v
Can I also connect at small character LCD screen to the Pi without adding anything else or am i stuck for power and pins?
best wishes - jack

We've got an I2C character LCD backpack available. Uses only 2 GPIO pinsSJack wrote:Can I also connect at small character LCD screen to the Pi without adding anything else or am i stuck for power and pins?

Re: Ultimate GPS v3 on a Pi + Character LCD question
the GPS ought to fit.
A bare LCD display is probably a little too big to sit flat on the proto plate. Not to mention that it would block the GPS. You really don't want to cover that with anything.
The I2C character LCD backpack I linked to before is also a pi plate.
What might work is to put the GPS on the proto plate, then stack the LCD plate on top of that. You would then use an external GPS antenna so that having the GPS under the LCD isn't a problem.

Hi sorry to chime in but the i2c LCD backpack is NOT supported yet, it currently ONLY works with arduino - we don't have code for it, please use the Pi Plate!

@adafruit -
Sorry - I misnamed the link. I called it a backpack, but the actual link is to the pi plate.
@SJack -
If you are planning to order, make sure you get the pi plate, not the backpack.
Sorry for the confusion...

Re: Ultimate GPS v3 on a Pi + Character LCD question
thanks for the response.
I'm getting confused though.
Can i stack the Adafruit Prototyping Pi Plate Kit for Raspberry Pi (for the GPS + ariel) with the Adafruit Blue&White 16x2 LCD+Keypad Kit for Raspberry Pi (for the LCD)
Stacking https://www.adafruit.com/products/801 with https://www.adafruit.com/products/1115
Or will I run out of GPIO pins after connecting the GPS module?
You can see what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to build this without using cobblers and ribbon cables and big breakout boards to keep to the footprint of the pi (height isn't a problem)

Re: Ultimate GPS v3 on a Pi + Character LCD question
You can if you build the prototyping pi plate with stacking headers. https://www.adafruit.com/products/1112
The stacking headers will pass all the pins through. You just have to be aware of which ones are in use and not try to use the same pins for two different things.

Re: Ultimate GPS v3 on a Pi + Character LCD question
Cool. I have the Raspberry Pi and the GPS breakout board v.3, so all i need is:
A GPS ariel
https://www.adafruit.com/products/960
A GPS ariel to Breakout board adapter
https://www.adafruit.com/products/851
A Pi Plate to fix the GPS v3 breakout board
https://www.adafruit.com/products/801
A stacking header to pass GPIO pins to the LCD plate above the GPS pi plate:
https://www.adafruit.com/products/1112
RGB Positive 16x2 LCD+Keypad Kit for Raspberry Pi (this comes with the i2c interface and the LCD right?)
https://www.adafruit.com/products/1109
is that about right?
