Bad T-Cobbler

Post by Cbela65 »

Your phone system says to email support then support says to come here - make up your mind please.

I received my order and after soldering the T-Cobbler together it is
not working. I tested pin to pin and it looks like all the pins are
interconnected. The soder lines are not perfect but they are clean
and nothing is touching. The cable is fine as i was able to use
the cable. Once the T-Cobbler is connected to the cable none of the
pins are working.

Have you had problems with the T-Cobbler like the one I have ordered?
How can we fix this problem?

Regards,

Claude

It sounds like you reached our support system from the least-used system first. These forums are the first line of support. Here we establish the details of an issue and collect the documentation the folks who handle returns and replacements use for reference.

In this case, the issue you described sounds like a short in the T-cobbler's PCB. Please post photos of the front and back, and we'll see if we can locate it. Once we confirm the flaw, we'll be happy to send you a new one.

By the way, I've moved this thread to the "Raspberry Pi accessories" forum, which is where we handle this kind of issue.

Hmm.. there are clearly no solder bridges between the joints, but I also don't see anything on the PCB that would short the pins together.

With the board disconnected from anything, just as you had it in the pictures, what resistance do you measure between the pins?

About 7/16 of an inch

Resistance, not distance. You need an ohmmeter (or multimeter) rather than a ruler. ;-)

If there's some kind of short in the board, the electrical resistance between the pins will be very low. If the board is made correctly, there should be no electrical connection between the pins at all, and the resistance should be infinite, or at least far higher than the meter can measure.

LOL that will teach me to read email when I first get up - as I match the pins they all have the proper lack of resistance as they should have. As expected all the grounds are also interconnected.

I re-tested with a project and I got it to work. not sure what the problem is but I reseated all the cables and it is working. I did that sevaral rimes before but tonight it is fine, so you can close this out and mark it as crazy customer problem.

*laugh* been there. ;-)

Glad it's working for you, and unless anything else pops up we'll write this down as a Heisenbug: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisenbug
