Fona with minicom and/or Asterisk

I'm thinking of developing a little Raspi Asterisk server for use with Fona. I could also do something with minicom. Is this feasible? All the discussion I've seen has centered on PPP. My Pi has been using minicom with a USB Dialup Modem (USR) seemingly OK. Any suggestions or where to look would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We don't have any in-house experience with either minicom or Asterisk, so we'll have to see if anyone in the community has done something similar.
