5v I2C device w/Raspberry Pi?

Post by dmmps »

What's needed to talk over I2C with a 5v device from the pi?

I think I want a level shifter, but I'm not sure about how to do that with bidirectional multiplayer lines like I2C.

Thanks for any help!

PS - The 5v I2C device I'm working with is the HT16K33 breakout, product 1427.

This breakout solves that problem: https://www.adafruit.com/products/757

If you want to roll your own, there are links to a couple of App Notes from Phillips/NXP (who officially own I2C) linked from the product page.

Thanks so much! That should be perfect. I'll pick up a couple and see how it goes.

I did see something potentially workable in a competitor's shop, based on a PCA9306 chip, but for twice the price. Yay fruit!
