Suggestions for mounting Pi Camera & other things on Permapr

Post by tarikjn »

Hey there,

I am building a prototype with a Pi model 1 A+, and am looking for a solid and compact setup to mount the following components:
- Pi Camera
- 1W LED with heat sink (https://www.adafruit.com/products/518)
- PIR sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/products/189)
- a push button, a RGB LED, a few components supporting the LEDs

I am using the 1W LED as a flash for the camera, so I could possibly do away with the heatsink since it's never on for a more than a few seconds.

Now what I am looking for is a neat way to mount all of this on top of the Pi, so that everything is horizontal on the Pi and looking at the floor when the Pi is mounted on the ceiling.

Right now I have a nasty breadboard, so step one is getting a Perma-Proto HAT (https://www.adafruit.com/products/2314, do I need the EEPROM?), what are then my options to mount the PIR sensor and camera? Is there some sort of HAT plate that can stack over all for mounting accessories or can I just screw in these accessories on Permat-Proto soldering holes? (remember I still need to access/see the push button and LED that are on the perma-proto)

I am thinking a 3-pin header socket for the PIR sensor, but it may not be enough to hold it well in place. Also what kind of mount would let me easily mount in on and off the ceiling without unscrewing/unplugging everything? (would would be what happens with the VESA mount)

Thanks in advance!

If you don't have a specific use for it, no.

You could use a sheet of pexiglass and some standoffs like the ones for the Pi Protector: https://www.adafruit.com/products/2281

You could mount that to the Pi Hat and have the whole assembly plug and unplug from the RasPi itself. As an additional suggestion, route all the electrical connections to one side of the plexiglass and Pi Hat then make the connections between layers with male and female header: https://www.adafruit.com/categories/154

That way you'll have access between the boards if you need it.
