PiTFT 3.5" TFT - I want to install this upside down

Post by StuartFox »

RE the PiTFT Plus 480x320 3.5" TFT+Touchscreen PID #2097

I've tried - but the only way I can fit this into my project is upside-down.

I'm installing this into a gameboy case with a Pi2. I intend to run Retropi.

Is there a way to configure this display to be run in this configuration?

Hi again,

So forgetting about making the screen work upside down, I can't even get it working at all with RetroPi (I've tested it with the image and it works fine so there's nothing wrong with the display)

Ok - so I've gone through the instructions to install the TFT drivers.

After downloading and installing everything I get an error message on bootup:

Failed (code8).
[FAIL] File system check failed. A log is being saved in /var/log/fsck/checkfs if that location is writable. Please repair the file system manually. ... failed!
[warn] a maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and resule system boot. ... (warning).
sulogin: root account is locked, starting shell

Can you start over on installing RetroPi? Clearly, something has gone wrong and trashed the file system.

Ok, I'll start again, but I'm confused as to which guide I should be using.

Already made the latest retropie image and then followed the steps here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... ed-install

There are also specific retropie instructions here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/running-open ... s/overview

But the note says these no longer work. Is there an ujpdated version of the latter guide that does work?

Let's try to narrow it down a little.

When go through this step up to the reboot, does the screen go white and then turn black?
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... all-kernel

If not, can you post the results of sudo dmesg at that point?

Hi,

Went through the steps up to the reboot - the screen stayed white the whole time.

Below are the results as requested. Many thanks.

I don't see the display drivers loading. Did you get any errors from this?

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-bootloader

It seems I was also having firewall issues as well so there were certain errors that I didn't pick up on.

I've got to a point were the screen works in console mode, But as soon as Retropie or piplay start, the GUI and games run on the HDMI monitor, not the TFT.

To address this, steps from this giude : https://learn.adafruit.com/running-open ... opie-setup are needed are they not?

Thing is, this guide still says it does not work at the moment so is this my issue?

Is it even possible for me to run Emulationstation / Retropie or PiPlay on an adafruit TFT with a Pi2 right now?

This is the relevant page:
https://learn.adafruit.com/running-open ... itft-setup

The framebuffer mirroring is what makes RetroPi show up on the PiTFT.

As far as I know, it all works on a Pi 2. Just make sure you're using the latest RetroPi image.

Thanks, I'll try again.

It says that the 3.5" tft is not recommended, is this still the case?

If it is ok to use now, would the name of the display be 35r?

Sorry to keep adding little bits, but the function get_mode() as described on that page doesn't exist in sudo nano /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh

What version # of RetroPie are you running? It's possible that something has changed in the runcommand.sh script or elsewhere. I can check but need to know the exact release you're using.

The 3.5" PiTFT is still not-recommended; with that many pixels, the refresh rate is something like 15-20 fps, tops. For gaming on anything larger than the 2.8" PiTFT, the best route would be a small HDMI display (composite video displays can work too, but may be a bit blurry).

It's RetroPie 3.2.1 as downloaded today.

so I'm coming across this:

install: cannot create regular file '/usr/local/bin/fbcp': No such file or directory

And this:

function get_mode() as described on that page doesn't exist in sudo nano /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh

I have the Adafruit 3.5" composite TV PRODUCT ID: 913 which I've already modified to run from 5v as per your instructions on the gamegear pi page. That's my fall-back if this doesn't work. (I can always build a second later). RE HDMI, I understand it's not really recommended under 5".

Thanks again for the support so far.... Cheers.
