Trinket Belt

by kf4kco on Mon Sep 30, 2013 10:24 pm

I decided to try making an LED belt with a trinket board. Using the schematic from from the LED belt kit with power diode but using the smaller JST connector so it can also use a LiPo battery. My first attempt shorted out with the thin gauge wire. Th second attempt, shown below, uses the circuit from the Larsen scanner, which avoids the double joint on the 60 LED strip.

Is there a better way to attach the JST receptacle leads?

Nice work!

You mean some sort of strain relief to protect the solder joints?

It solders up fine but when I try to wear it the connections break. It really needs a break out box IMHO. I guess my question is can I drill a hole in the led strip pads or are there connectors for the three pin strips?

Yeah - you want a strain relief. Loop the leads up around the waterproof housing and tape or glue them there solidly, so that the housing takes the strain instead of the solders.

Do you have any photos of strain relief?

Not really. You just want to secure the wires to the waterproof housing, so that the wires can't tug on the solders

I decided that my poor soldering skills work better with a gemma. That and I ordered two more gemma boards. Wired through Vout, D1, and Gnd. It works perfectly and only needs three connections. I put heat shrink on each end--three small pieces to keep them from moving and one large piece on the disconnected end. I can conclude it was the trinker data line because I tried the power for the far end JST plug before desoldering it and it worked just fine.
